How Long to Burn a Candle the First Time, and Why It Matters

How long to burn a candle the first time is the one question worth answering before you strike the match. The short answer: give the first burn at least two hours, and never more than four. That first evening decides how the wax melts on every evening after it, so it is worth a little patience. Below we explain why, how it works for pillar and taper candles, and what to do before and after.

How long should you burn a candle the first time?

Burn a new candle for at least two hours the first time, and no longer than four. That gives the wax time to melt into an even pool across the top, so it finds its shape and keeps to it.

Two hours is a minimum, not a target to hit exactly. A wider candle needs a little longer than a narrow one, because the heat has further to travel. A common rule of thumb is about one hour of burning for every 2.5 cm of diameter. For our Signature Candle, which is 8 cm across, that comes to roughly three hours on the first evening, comfortably within the four-hour limit.

Why does the first burn matter?

The first burn sets the pattern for the burns that follow. Wax tends to melt back to the edge it reached the first time, so a generous first burn gives every later evening a good starting point.

When a candle is lit for only twenty minutes, the flame melts a small circle around the wick and then goes out. The next time, the wax melts within that same small circle again. Given two hours or more at the start, the melt spreads further across the top, and the candle burns more evenly from then on. It is a small investment of time at the beginning of a candle that lasts, in the case of the Signature, 180 to 200 hours.

Do you trim the wick before the first burn?

Yes. Trim the wick to 0.5 to 1 cm before the first burn, and before every burn after it.

A new wick is often left slightly long so it is easy to light. Shortened to 0.5 to 1 cm, it gives a calm, steady flame of the right size for the wax around it. A wick that is too long gives a taller, restless flame. We explain the details, and how to do it neatly, in How to Trim a Candle Wick, and How Short It Should Be.

First burn for a pillar candle

A pillar candle stands without a jar, so its first burn is about letting the top melt evenly while the outer wall holds its form. Two to four hours, out of any draught, does exactly that.

  • Place it well. On a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from open windows and air currents. Uneven airflow causes uneven burning.
  • Trim first. 0.5 to 1 cm, as above.
  • Stay with it. Plan the first burn for an evening at home: dinner, reading, a long conversation. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Stop at four hours. Even if the evening goes on, put the candle out and let it rest.

Our pillar candles are poured from a 50/50 blend of beeswax and soy wax with a cotton wick. LLIOR is a Dutch candle brand that makes unscented candles from a 50/50 blend of beeswax and soy wax, with a cotton wick and no paraffin, added fragrance or dye. Without added fragrance, a first burn is simply about light and form: there is no scent to wait for, only the flame settling into the wax.

Do taper candles need a long first burn?

No. Taper candles are narrow, so the flame melts across the whole top almost immediately. There is no first-burn rule to follow beyond trimming the wick and keeping them out of a draught.

Our Four Tapers are 27 cm long, 2.2 cm across, and give six to eight hours of light each. You can light them for a single dinner and put them out afterwards. Straight in the holder and away from moving air, they burn calmly. For more on choosing and burning them, read Taper Candles: What They Are and How Long They Last.

What if the first burn was too short?

Then give the next burn the full time. Let the candle cool completely, trim the wick to 0.5 to 1 cm, and light it again when you have at least two hours ahead of you.

One short evening is not the end of a candle. What matters is the habit: most burns long enough for the top to melt evenly, none longer than four hours. If you often light a candle for a short moment, a taper is the better companion for those evenings, and the pillar can wait for a longer one.

After the first burn: a simple routine

Once the first burn has set the pattern, every later evening follows the same few steps.

  1. Trim the wick to 0.5 to 1 cm before lighting.
  2. Burn for at least two hours where you can, and never longer than four at a time.
  3. Put the flame out with a snuffer, so the wick stays straight for next time. See How to Put Out a Candle.
  4. Let the candle cool fully before you move it or light it again.

That routine is what lets a candle reach the burn time it was made for. If you want to know how many hours each of our candles gives, How Long Does a Candle Burn? sets it out per candle.

Frequently asked questions

How long should the first burn of a candle be?

At least two hours and no longer than four. Wider candles need a little longer than narrow ones; roughly one hour per 2.5 cm of diameter is a useful guide.

What is the first burn rule for candles?

Let the first burn last long enough for the wax to melt evenly across the top, at least two hours, and trim the wick to 0.5 to 1 cm before you light it.

Should I trim the wick on the first burn?

Yes. Trim it to 0.5 to 1 cm before the first burn and before every burn after that.

Do pillar candles need a first burn?

Yes. A pillar candle benefits most from a first burn of two to four hours, on a stable surface and out of any draught, so the top melts evenly while the wall keeps its form.

Do taper candles need a first burn?

No. Tapers are narrow enough to melt evenly straight away. Trim the wick, keep them upright and out of a draught.
